Split Custody of Dog Ordered in Maryland Divorce Case

This subject always fascinates me, but not for the reasons you may think. What surprises me is that so many non-dog people think we are crazy to fight for our furry friends when a relationship goes south. I do struggle with the following: there could emerge a sort of standard 50/50 arrangement that judges use by default – especially in certain states. But say you enter a marriage with a dog you’ve had for years, and that marriage fails after only a couple of years. A 50/50 split would not seem fair. Read more

New Orleans residents come together to rescue drowning Pit Bull
I’d guess that many of us have been involved in a situation like this at some point. It’s wonderful to see what a little collective effort can amount to.
A dozen or so New Orleans residents gathered Tuesday to save a Pit Bull from drowning in the 17th Street canal. The panicked dog kept changing direction and swimming for miles in either direction, but could not find a way to safety. “She was so just thankful and sweet. She was shivering. I don’t know if it was from being so tired or what, or cold. So we just held her. We tried to give her food, which she didn’t want. She was just in shock,” described Michelle Ingram of Zeus’ Place, the rescue that will eventually adopt out the rescued pooch. Read more

Rescue of the Month: Rocky Ridge Refuge
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be Janice Wolf. Wait, allow me to clarify: I’m not headed off to Switzerland for any special surgeries (my wife is probably breathing a sigh of relief) but I want to be Janice Wolf in spirit. And as you will see, she possesses an abundance of the kind of spirit and passion that makes many of us stop to reevaluate our chosen path(s) in life. I would love to be able to say that I have made the brave, selfless choices she has for herself and her animals. I cannot, and few that I know may claim to make the kind of difference that Janice Wolf does for animals in need, around the clock, every day, week and month of the year. Read more
Bag Lunch
Free to a good home: Friday’s lunch.
There are all sorts of interesting side effects that come with a year of sleep deprivation, side effects such as constantly feeling tired, fuzzy and distracted. Rising is a bit of a struggle, and I’ve often joked that I am not fully awake until my tires roll out of the driveway and touch the street in front of our house. Last week offered me the opportunity to put that statement to the test. Read more
