xmas girl sola

…I was given a gift, and did not yet know it.

A little yellow whirling dervish was born in a remote corner of Vermont on Christmas eve of 2003. True to her roots, she was unrefined, adventurous, fearless. She was the shit.

Those who came before her had recently departed this planet for greener pastures, and in doing so took this heavy heart with them.  Their passing left a void, a deafening silence in a house that had never been dogless. I shudder to think what may have come to be had I not been made aware of the little wonder that sleeps at my feet tonight as I type this. Our decision to trek northward to meet her and welcome a new dog into our pack was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made, and this skeptic will never again question the meaning of fate.

Sola, you may not know it, but this thing that I do, these blog posts of mine are my way of saying thank you to you and your kind, and this man knows that they will never suffice.  Dogs like you give more to our species than can ever be returned, and as long as I am able, I will remind the world that your birthday is truly special. Not only did you find my broken heart and bring it back to me Sola, but in doing so, you warmed it with a thousand furry pawprints.

Good retriever. ♥
