An Oklahoma puppy that was euthanized, declared dead by a vet, and left in a dumpster has made a miraculous recovery, and will soon be available for adoption.

Abandoned outside a dog shelter in Sulphur, Okla., “Wall-e” (named for the lovable movie character who was the last of his kind) and his litter mates were seriously ill when they were found, so a vet at the shelter made the decision to euthanize them. After being pronounced dead, the bodies of the puppies were discarded in the shelter’s dumpster.

The next morning, animal control officer Scott Prall took a look inside the dumpster and was amazed to find one puppy was still very much alive. “He was just as healthy as could be,” Prall was quoted as saying.

The shocking discovery prompted local vet Amanda Kloski to take the puppy in temporarily. After The Arbuckle Veterinary clinic examined Wall-E and gave him a clean bill of health, offers to adopt started pouring in, and the clinic said they will start reviewing applications today.

Prall indicated that Wall-e and the others may not have been put to sleep at all if Murray County shelters were not overloaded, noting that the Sulphur and Davis clinics are small and inadequate. Local groups are currently working to raise the funds required to build a new county shelter.
