Pima County’s Animal Care Center is taking as many as 60 dogs a day, with total intake expected to exceed 32,000 cats and dogs this year.

Fortunately, the PACC was one of only four shelters in the US to receive a grant that funds a certified dog trainer for the shelter in order to help dogs improve their mental, emotional and behavioral health, and greatly reduce their chances of being returned. The annual grant is made available by Petfinder.com, the Animal Rescue Site and GreaterGood.org.

Starting February 1st and continuing throughout 2011, Friends of Pima Animal Control in Tucson, Missouri Humane Society in St. Louis, Charlotte Mecklenberg Animal Care and Control in North Carolina and the Pennsylvania SPCA in Philadelphia will have four trainers practicing the Train To Adopt method developed by well-known dog trainer, Sue Sternberg.

So while adoption rates are up slightly at the shelter, now all animals who find themselves at PACC have a greater chance at finding a forever home.
