Alanna Walk 2

Fourteen-year-old Alanna Thurman may not have the same resources as most large organizations when it comes to putting together a fundraising event, but that didn’t stop her from doing so.

In support of the 3rd annual Morris Animal Foundation K9 Cancer Walk in Elk Grove, Calif., on May 7, Alanna decided to organize her own neighborhood walk with proceeds benefiting Morris Animal Foundation’s Canine Cancer Campaign. The Canine Cancer Campaign is a national effort to help dogs live longer, healthier, cancer-free lives.

In a handwritten letter to Morris Animal Foundation, Alanna writes, “The walk went great! Around 10 dogs showed up and we walked loops around our property trails. It was lots of fun. We raised about $400.”

Alanna and her efforts are a perfect representation of the dedication and heart that the K9 Cancer Walks are truly all about. Last year nearly 700 participants rallied to celebrate canine cancer survivors and memorialize those who have died. The successful event raised more than $64,000 for research to prevent and treat this terrible disease.

“I am very passionate about dogs, and I hope one day we will find a cure for canine cancer!” said Alanna.

Sadly, an estimated 50 percent of all dogs will battle cancer, and it remains the No. 1 cause of death in dogs over the age of 2 years.

The 3rd annual K9 Cancer Walk in Elk Grove takes place May 7 at 9:30 a.m. Sign up today and help continue the fight against canine cancer. Online registration is now open. Additional information can be found at www.K9CancerWalk.org or by calling 800.243.2345.
