A Wisconsin woman drowned Sunday afternoon when she fell through ice while trying to rescue her stranded dog.

Diane Godnek Knudson was walking her dogs in Rivers Edge Park in Menomonee Falls when she went missing. Knudson’s husband, Richard, went to the park when his wife did not come home from walking their dogs. When he arrived at the park he saw their dog Buster’s body floating in a retention pond; their other dog Chloe was struggling to keep her head above water.

Richard crawled out on the ice and somehow managed to rescue Chloe, but there was no sign of his wife. Sadly, a dive team located her shortly thereafter in 6-8 feet of water, some distance from the shore. She was taken to Community Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A devoted dog lover, Diane served on the Granville Dog Park board: she and her husband often volunteered to help keep the park clean for the enjoyment of other dog lovers. “She was devoted to her family and her dogs,” Richard Knudson said. “She will be so greatly missed by everyone.”
