Less than a day after the theft of Cranston RI lab-shepherd mix Jack’s specially fitted wheelchair cart, a family whose own dog had passed on presented Jack with the gift of restored mobility.
Marilyn Proulx and her dog Jack made news this week when his specially fitted wheelchair cart was stolen from the side of the family’s home within a few hours of Jack’s walk, late in the day on Tuesday
Jack has two herniated discs and has lost the use of his back legs. He retains strength in his front legs, and since getting the wheelchair cart three months ago has been walking and even running again. Marilyn credits the cart with restoring Jack’s well-being and quality of life.
The theft of the $600 dollar cart struck a chord with people when it was reported in the news, and as calls came in it became apparent that Jack would soon be mobile again. Marilyn was pleasantly surprised to have him back in action before the end of the day, when a man whose dog, Gil, had used a similar cart came forward with the replacement. The donor said he kept Gil’s cart in the garage after the dog’s passing, waiting for the opportunity to turn it over to another dog in need. The wheelchair cart was a perfect fit, so that dog was Jack.
Despite the unconscionable theft, and thanks to the gift of Gil’s wheels, Jack is getting his exercise and recreation as usual.
