Each morning, Oconee County Humane Society president Randy Van Surdam and his dog Dexter climb aboard his 1964 Bentley helicopter and make the two mile hop from their private landing strip to the Oconee County Regional Airport.

Van Surdam owns a vintage aircraft business and earns his keep as an airplane mechanic. Every day, he and Dexter make the commute and spend the day together at work, and Dexter wouldn’t have it any other way – in fact, he waits for Van Surdam under the chopper every day.

“When I come out in the morning, he’ll be sitting under it,” Van Surdam said.

Dexter became paralyzed in a freak accident when he was looking at Van Surdam and ran into a tree. He’s since adapted to a wheelchair, and uses it to make his way around – but is just as happy to go without. In fact, Van Surdam says his little marvel seems to forget that he’s disabled, and after seeing him in action, you may just forget yourself.
