A Colorado woman accidentally parked her car in a pond yesterday after being distracted by a loose dog.

Grand Junction authorities say the woman was visiting Canyon View Park with her dogs and was in the parking lot when one of them jumped out an open window. Fearing for its safety she quickly exited the vehicle and pursued the dog on foot. Police say the unnamed woman eventually secured the loose animal, but forgot one important detail in the process: the car was in reverse when she jumped out of it.

Witnesses watched helplessly as it flew across the parking lot and into the pond. “She immediately reported it to the police and we came out here and it was probably about two hundred yards out into the pond, completely submerged,” said Grand Junction Police Sergeant Douglas Norcross.

After a few hours workers were able to locate a cable long enough to reach the stranded vehicle and hauled it out of the water. The (recently purchased) car is said to be a total loss, but rescue crews say nobody on the scene was injured and the dogs are resting safely at home.
