15,000 Dogs Slaughtered for Chinese Food Festival

Yulin, China hosted a food festival a few weeks ago, and more than 15,000 dogs ended up on the menu.
Having earned a reputation for serving some of the most delicious dog dishes in the world, the festival drew sizable crowds as dog meat connoisseurs from near and far descended on the city to participate in festivities.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Local Lu Hin said “It is just like other meat. Smaller animals tend to be more delicate and sweeter while very big dogs have a strong, muscular taste. We proved that when we started the festival a few years ago and everybody accepts that the best dog meat dishes come from Yulin. That was why we created the festival and the number of visitors we get is a testimony to the fact that everybody recognizes how good the dog meat is from the region.”
Consumption of dog meat is still a widely accepted practice in Guangdong province, home to a number of dog farms, where pups are often slaughtered in their first three to four months of life. Opponents of the dog meat trade are turning up the heat, however: due for legislative consideration in the spring is a proposed law that would outlaw animal cruelty, including the practice of beating dogs to death in order to enhance their flavor.
This makes me cry, those poor creatures!

What got me started on boycotting all things Chinese was the story about how dogs are skinned alive for their fur which is then sold to US manufacturers as “faux fur” but it’s really dog fur. Then I found out that basically China “owns” the US because US has borrowed so much money AND the trade deficit is SO huge (as an example, the largest US retailer, WalMart – maybe the world’s largest retailer) sends literally hundreds of empty cargo ships from US to China every single day and they come back to the states fully loaded – every single day). It has been difficult to root out the “Made in China” because some ingredients/materials are not required to be listed on items assembled in the US, as scarce as those items are. Diligence pays off!
PETA used to have a video on youtube that showed dogs alive after being skinned. Those images will stay with me forever.
(and no, I do not support PETA, it just happened to be one of their videos that I saw.)
@Holly, I saw the PeTA video of the live skinnng too and yes I am now haunted by it. I support PeTA dont believe all you read on the internet about how “bad” they are .. OK ??

I am sick at heart hearing this awful story, I cannot imagine the pain and fear those sweet babies suffered at the hands of madmen. Something has to be done to stop this horrible practice, China must be insane to allow this. BOYCOTT EVERYTHING FROM CHINA!!!!
Agree 100% with everything you said. I’m literally crying at work right now after reading this story. I can’t begin to imagine the awful suffering and torture these poor dogs went through. The only consolation I can think of is that they are no longer suffering and hopefully playing happily in doggie heaven right now!

I am not sure if they even qualify as “lowlife idiots” perhaps something less, or nothing at all…
Here, many of us move mountains to try to give one lost/homeless/abandoned/abused dog a loving home.
There, they are slaughtered and roasted with abandon, to be served along with salads and desserts to “intelligent, thinking, feeling” humans.
What gives???
I am absolutely horrified seeing this! This is outrageous! How can this possibly be going on?? I am crying at my desk at work. It makes me sick to my stomach to see that this barbaric treatment exists! PLEASE LETS GET THIS STOPPED…..someway….somehow! Pray for these people to have a change of heart and stop this immediately!!

“beating dogs to death in order to enhance their flavor”? Is that really necessary? That is just plain SICK, DISGUSTING, and WRONG. I am not even trying to be funny when I say that I hope these people get diahrrea off of this.

Oh. Please. DO not presume to lecture me about “stereotyping and judging and entire race of people.” I have too many decades of study of some of these cultures including original source material and it is not stereotyping or falsely judging a culture when you have engaged critical thinking about the history and issues that inform an entire culture. Some people would like to continue “drinking the Kool-Aid” and swallowing the propaganda put forth by certain governments because it is just plain easier to do so. Learning, thinking about, and reaching informed decisions about how you personally feel about “an entire race of people” based on decades of factual research, is not anything less than personal opinion and frankly common sense. I choose to think the way I think about the Chinese people as a whole culture and Chinese government in particular based not on knee-jerk reactions but upon thoughtful learning. If you choose to love another society and its government that has a shameful millenia-long record of human rights violations and more or less deliberate subversive attacks via faulty products on our own society and culture, that is your right. (Obviously you have completely forgotten how many US dogs and cats died horrifically because of tainted food ingredients which came from China!) But don’t co-opt a “high moral ground” and presume to lecture others about their own choices!
Your choice is yours, I think you should take 26 Valiums and get plenty of rest. Everything will be okay in the morning.
i love dogs.the madness is in the slaughter methods.has anyone ever visited an industrial pig farm or seen cows on carousels living out their sorry days?they live and die like this for us:me and you.what’s to be done?what shall we abandon in order to improve their lot?not much, i suspect.

This is barbarick and toatly gruel and to beat the poor inocent dogs to death to make more flavorsome is discusting and outragious .what the hell is wrong with these people surley they have enough come sense to know that this is wrong on all levals or are they that sick and twistered that they get a kick out of it. the animal cruelty that goes on it makes me sick and i feel so sorry for those poor defencless ( mans bestfriend ) that cant speak up for them selfs …if given the chance i would do to these people what they are doing to the dogs and lets see how they like it the assholes.
My heart dropped when I read this article. There is so much animal abuse everywhere. I get sick when I hear stories about abuse. I’ve heard sick stories about what people do to cats, it will never leave my mind. Hug your pets, donate to help homeless pets find homes. Pets give us unconditional love. I go home for lunch every day so I can be with my pets. Shame on those people who abuse God’s gift, animals.
whilst i cannot agree with the eating of dogs ( i am a vegetarian ) or any other animal for that fact.
i can see thier point when they say what is the difference between pets (to us) being eaten and a pet cow being called beef !!
but what makes it disgusting and unacceptable is the cruelty involved cramped cages for one and another beaten to enhance flavour !!!! i dont think so
in comparison what about the pet dog beaten to death because it fouled in the house that was classed as criminal and the person went to court.

This is simply disgusting! I can not believe that people are actually connoisseurs. That is gross. I can not imagine that. My two rescue dogs are my children. They are a very HUGE part of my family. I Love Them.
This needs to stop. Getting animals fixed would cut down on animal abuse. I think that this should be the norm.

As an avid dog lover this makes me sick….however some might say the same thing about me eating beef. HOWEVER, there is NO EXCUSE to treat them inhumanely. It is one thing to kill dogs for food, but QUITE another to cram them in cages like that, beat them to death, and to such sentient animals that have been truly domesticated to be around us people……….whether people in those countries see them as pets or food, humane treatment is an imperative for any food item.

As a Hong Kong Chinese I felt so shame about it that’s why I refuse to visit PRC due to the horrific scene of animal slaughter, is there any way to stop this brutality on animals?
I agreed with you, I didnt want to visit PRC too. I’m a Chinese from Singapore, and I love my dog/dogs so much; they are much better than human. I felt disgrace and shame for the act of China’s Chinese!!
That was a tough read. Took me a full 24hours to get up the courage to click the link. The dog in the far right looks JUST like a foster dog I placed. so sad and barbaric.
The people that do this have no soul, let alone a heart. We can only hope there is a hell for them to rot in.

This is heartbreaking and no other words can i find, but what I will say is, how many of you have wrote a comment eat meat, pig,cow,sheep,rabbit, fish ect? This is what any animal has to go through every day to put meat on someones plate, I am a veggie and proud of it.

This is really really cruelty and unacceptable. You china peoples are crazy and barbarian. Please don’t disgrace the entire Chinese in global world that loves dogs! I’m a Chinese from Singapore, but I completely cannot accept the fact of eating dogs and abusing them. You are not living in the stone age time, which you need dogs for food. These are really inhuman and lack of humanity!!!!

This is just sick, and we do not beat a cow to death to enhance the flavor so do not even compare the two. Im hoping the chinese gov passes a animal cruelty law and i plan on sharing this story, the more outrage the gov sees the more likely the law will get passed. Giving my puppy an extra kissy tonight.

Dogs have feelings both physical and emotional. How can a so called human do this to a DOG AND LIVE WITH THEMSELF. I hope Karma will punish them . This must be stopped
This makes me so sick. I hate to feel so helpless, unable to stop this from happening to these precious beings! How can they, as a civilization do this to noble creatures?!? As how much I do not like the idea of people eating dogs and I am against it. As for the culture arguments, I try not to judge BUT, they should treat their dogs better and let them live a good life then humanely slaughter them rather than torturing them to death and causing them pain and misery during their entire lives. How can a meat be good if it comes from a sick animals? As for you who says animals are the same in USA, I refuse to support any company that does not treat them right. It is our responsible as the most powerful beings to protect these who cant speak for themselves. Also, people need to understand that dogs are very special and bond, serves mankind while other species do not have the capacity. Nevertheless, all creations should be respected. I don’t know how to live with this! Does anyone know how I can tell if the flax fur is from real dogs? How do I tell if products are made by China? Korea practices the same cruelty so I also boyscott anything from Korea, even their Kia car.
