“Visit Milwaukee” isn’t something you’ll find on most people’s bucket list, but this city on the shore of Lake Michigan is perfect for a pet friendly getaway. What makes it so great? First, it’s very walkable – something that is especially appealing when your travel companions have paws and fur. Second, there are outdoor activities to suit any taste, from window shopping and dining, to playing on the beach. Lastly, the state is known for it’s cheese-making – and dogs love cheese!

One of Milwaukee’s best features is it’s walkable nature – you can easily explore it’s nooks and crannies on foot. The Historic Third Ward has undergone a major make-over and is now the coolest neighborhood in city. Old warehouses are now lofts and condos and the shops and eateries have followed. The Milwaukee Public Market is not to be missed. Shop for produce, seafood, meats, cheeses, vegetables, candies, and flowers from local businesses – and then grab a seat at the pet friendly sidewalk tables for a little people watching.

If you haven’t stuffed yourself at the vendors in the Market, cross the street to The Wicked Hop for lunch. With their covered outdoor seating, it’s the perfect place to relax in the shade and enjoy one of the icy cold beverages that made Milwaukee famous.

Walk off lunch on the path along the lake. Stroll though the festival grounds, past the art museum, and up to Veteran’s park. If you make it all the way to Juneau Park Lagoon, look for the pet friendly paddle boats.

From there, make your way west to the river and mosey down the River Walk. This pedestrian walkway overlooking the river is a popular hang out, with dozens of restaurants and bars providing outdoor seating with a view. Watch for John Hawks Pub – they have pet friendly outdoor seating.

Don’t miss the opportunity to get your picture with one of Milwaukee’s most well-known residents – Arthur Fonzarelli! Aaaaaye. This photo is one of Buster and Ty’s most prized possessions.

Milwaukee has a nice selection of pet friendly restaurants and plenty of pet friendly hotels – you’ll have no trouble finding one that appeals to you. And, before you pack up and head back home, take a ride up North Lake Drive to one of Milwaukee’s most unique neighborhoods – the old stone mansions that were built next to the lake back in the day.
