Residents of a Chinese village have been moved by a bittersweet example of canine loyalty.

loyal chinese dogThe dog has been guarding the grave of its deceased owner, Lao Pan, a single man who died earlier this month at the age of 68. After Lao Pan passed away, his apartment in Panjiatun village near Qingdao city, Shandong Province was cleared out, and shortly thereafter his dog found its way to his grave. And refused to leave.

Reports say that for seven days, the dog remained steadfast, laying at the side of the burial site in a silent vigil. Seeing that the dog was going hungry, villagers attempted to lure it away with treats, but it simply took the food and went back to the grave.

They say for now, while the dog is in mourning, they will bring food and water to it, and plans have been made to build a kennel at the burial site if the heartbroken dog will not leave.
