A U.S. Marine who went to great lengths to save a stray dog from Afghanistan has been reunited with his pet as part of a Thanksgiving surprise planned by friends and family.

reunitedCorporal Ward Van Alstine of the United States Marine Corps recently returned from deployment.  Currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, Van Alstine drove to Santa Barbara to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with family members and a fellow soldier.

Much to his surprise, when he arrived, Chloe, the stray dog he saved in Afghanistan, was sitting on the front porch waiting to greet him. Fox News cameras were rolling when the pair were reunited, and Van Alstine was elated, saying, “…you know, your dog is always your best friend.”

.
Van Alstine said the stray was unapproachable when first encountered. He was eventually able to lure her closer and befriend the frightened dog by tempting her with energy bars.

Charity organization Nowzad played a large part in making the reunion possible. Learn more about Nowzad and their commendable efforts in an earlier report.
