Chinese Activists Intercept Truck En Route to Slaughter House, Save 500 Dogs

Spotted on a Yunnan Province highway, a truck hauling hundreds of dogs from Fumin to Kunming was intercepted by animal activists following a wave of social media outrage. Destined for China’s restaurants, the commercial vehicle became an object of interest after pictures of it began circulating on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

Concerned that the vehicle was in violation of transportation laws, police directed the driver to a nearby station. Animal advocates arrived and began unloading cages as soon as it was parked. In all, they counted  505 dogs packed into 156 cages.

.

Volunteers would spend the day and night feeding, watering and treating the survivors. Unfortunately a number of dogs were crushed to death in their cages.

When officers from the local Animal Inspection Department investigating the matter arrived the next day, they delivered unbelievably bad news: according to local law, the transportation of the dogs was legal. Because the driver of the truck had a license to transport them, police said that despite their ultimate destination, there was nothing they could do to hold the dogs.

When all appeared lost,  a private dog rescue group came forward. In the interest of saving the dogs, they paid the truck driver 60,000 Yuan to take them from him. Now the hard work begins as dogs are dispersed to local shelters, and those responsible for saving them them scramble to find homes for as many as possible.

This is the third large scale rescue of its kind in Asia this year. In January, 750 dogs were saved by a Thai Navy patrol, and later that month,  1,100 dogs were saved from a trip to the slaughterhouse in Chongqing, China.

Thank you to the saviors in Chinas – your work is hard and thankless – know you are appreciated on the other side of the world as well as in the heart of every dog-loving person there is.

Thank-you to the private dog rescue group for intervening. God bless those who try to stop this horrific practice. These pictures are sickening. Many prayers and hope these poor animals get a loving place to call home.

The tendency is to cheer the activists, but what will they do with more than 500 dogs? Will those dogs now be neglected, euthanized, or ???

Eating a dog is wrong! Dogs are like people. They have emotions and the ability to love, much unlike chickens, goats, pigs, cows or fish. :X

Brill! What a wonderful gift to both the dogs and the humans.

I so wish anyone who cares an iota about dogs would do the same thing for the 10 billion land animals slaughtered in equally vicious manners in this country. I’d love to see animal activists stop a truck full of 6-mos-old piglets on their way to slaughter…pigs, by the way, are more intelligent than dogs and equally emotional and engaging. Or maybe just stop eating those animals.

But alas, animal activists in this country see dogs as “companions” while blithely sentencing billions of amazing creatures to an absolutely unnecessary slaughter.

I agree with you that animals in our very own backyard are treated with complete disreguard. I personally only eat chicken and eggs that are cage free. No beef or pork at all. These “factory farms” we have are cruel to the animals, and whether the animals are intelligent or not….matters not. I’m not a vegetarian, but I make conscious choices as to where my food comes from, and it must be cruelty free.

what happened to sanctions on nations that violate the rights of living things? the US gov’t needs to tell China that we will stop importing all the crap that is made there until they stop the slaughter of dogs for food of all things. They are responsible for the slaughter of endagered animals, dogs, and still big on the fur trade.. Yes I know everything is made in China and it is hard to avoid buying their imports but it really is crap quality. I spend the extra few bucks where I can when I find something made somewhere other than China and hope its better quality and a few extra bucks here and there make them think twice about turning mans best friend into dinner for god sake.

Every time this happens, I am glad they are relieved from the horrific conditions they are kept in, the tiny cramped cages, the abhorrent slaughter (yes, I am veg(etari)an, I despise people eating cows as much as dogs, before someone starts!) but seriously, where do all the rescues end up? Even in the most animal friendly country, and I’m not saying anything about the Chinese people, just that even in somewhere like America or Britain it would be a MAMMOTH task to find homes for so many animals! Obviously I pray they do find homes, but I still wonder, especially as this is the third one this year…

I was in China last year, and whilst eating in a locals home, we turned around to see dog paws laying on the table behind us.. it was a disturbing sight and while I realize there is a severe lack of food and many mouths to feed it is about survival of the fittest. If your child was starving you would do anything it took to feed it.. sucks it has to be our canine friends.. :(

Encourage these heroic activists to get organized and get our support! We are all very powerful when we band together. I say start an international movement that brands dog eaters as “those with small penises.”

Hit these idiots right where it matters and humiliate their supposed “virility.”

There are many countries that the people are starving, and there is not enough food, however you will still see the people trying to care for thier dogs. They do not chose to eat them..as they do not see them as food but as companions. China sees dog has a food source…really has nothing to do with shortage of food.

Killing and eating ANY animal is immoral, we are outraged that some cultures eat “pets” but think twice tonight as you dig into that juicy pork chop. I hope these poor dogs survive, it’s very unlikely they will find homes, as most Chinese prefer pure bred fashionable dogs, these poor creatures are mixed strays that are considered only good for eating.

People over here are obviously outraged by this because we keep dogs as pets. Cute, fluffy ball fetching friends. But we don’t think twice about where the bacon, the steak or the low fat turkey breast came from. Those are animals too. I’ve seen pot belly pigs play fetch. It’s a different culture over there. In India for example they wouldn’t dream of ever eating a cow. Those people would look at us as barbarians for eating their sacred animals. Taking them to slaughter houses by the truck load and processed like they were nothing.

They not only eat them, but they skin them alive for their fur. If anyone is wearing Fur trimmed clothing or cute little animals MADE IN CHINA you can bet a dog was brutally murdered to make it. Think about that before you eat/wear anything from China…..

A lot of these comments are so ignorant and ethnocentric, it is disheartening. The Chinese are no more cruel to animals than we are in the states. I guess most of you either haven’t visited a factory farm or believe chickens, cows, and pigs don’t deserve humane treatment…only dogs do. No species deserves better treatment than another, but there seems to be a prevalent belief that people come first then dogs and cats…trailing behind are fish, fowl, and other animals who can suffer and die as long as you get to eat meat in convenient styrofoam packages and wear leather shoes. I really hope for more from the animal rescue community than such judgment and obtuseness.

im currently living in china. it honestly is a sh**hole. The way they treat their animals is a true insight to the character and mentality of this country and their treatment towards each other. I saved a puppy from being boiled ALIVE. They say humanity makes you human but i say cruelty does – no species is capable of cruelty except humans

i totali agree we’re not against all China. But think positive. Here most peoples are taking only against those cruel with animals. Good and bad every where. But there should be a limit enough is enough.

OMG!!! They need to be educated about animal cruelty!!! No wonder they’re making products that are killing dogs over there. They don’t value the dog’s lives at all. People are the cruelest animals. I wonder if we will ever change for the better.
