Chinese Activists Intercept Truck En Route to Slaughter House, Save 500 Dogs

150 commentsSpotted on a Yunnan Province highway, a truck hauling hundreds of dogs from Fumin to Kunming was intercepted by animal activists following a wave of social media outrage. Destined for China’s restaurants, the commercial vehicle became an object of interest after pictures of it began circulating on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.
Concerned that the vehicle was in violation of transportation laws, police directed the driver to a nearby station. Animal advocates arrived and began unloading cages as soon as it was parked. In all, they counted 505 dogs packed into 156 cages.

Volunteers would spend the day and night feeding, watering and treating the survivors. Unfortunately a number of dogs were crushed to death in their cages.
When officers from the local Animal Inspection Department investigating the matter arrived the next day, they delivered unbelievably bad news: according to local law, the transportation of the dogs was legal. Because the driver of the truck had a license to transport them, police said that despite their ultimate destination, there was nothing they could do to hold the dogs.
When all appeared lost, a private dog rescue group came forward. In the interest of saving the dogs, they paid the truck driver 60,000 Yuan to take them from him. Now the hard work begins as dogs are dispersed to local shelters, and those responsible for saving them them scramble to find homes for as many as possible.
This is the third large scale rescue of its kind in Asia this year. In January, 750 dogs were saved by a Thai Navy patrol, and later that month, 1,100 dogs were saved from a trip to the slaughterhouse in Chongqing, China.

well they do it to dogs and cats there, they do it to cows, calf, goats, etc etc all over the world. it is very disturbing. Stop eating meat, why does someone satisfaction have to come from a living creature suffering?

i hope all you people who are outraged by this take a look at your own eating practices and realize that it is no different than eating any kind of meat. all animals that are killed for their felsh suffer like this.
Their days are numbered. What goes around comes around.
I wonder how many of you “outraged” people are vegetarians. Substitute “dog” for “cow” or “pig” or “lamb” or “chicken” etc.etc. and you have your own eating habit right in front of you. And just stop to think how many dogs are euthanized each day in the US just because they were not adopted within a few short days. So they are not eaten afterwards – but dead is dead. I am glad those dogs in China were saved, but to cry for an embargo and calling the Chinese inhumane is misplaced. Think about China next time you eat meat!
well, we eat pigs. they are in nearly every study as intelligent and loveable as dogs. don’t get me wrong, me loves meat
. but this is just a cultural difference. we perhaps don’t like it but what we do to the animals who live their short lifes in farm factories is no different! (buy grass fed organic meat!)

So sad that in china is happening this, dogs are so loyal and lovable, thank God for the people that, prevent their final horror, I hope the beastiality of that society will chance, is true we eat meat from other animals but for centuries cows, goat, chixs, pigs are breed for this purpose, im not saying that this is ok but going to the extreme to eat dogs is not acceptable, dont buy anything from china!!!!!
Hats off to these brave men and women of china who have the guts to take on their government and community. Bravo. There is hope for china with this new generation of people who value the lives of dogs and animals. Keep up the great work and you are a blessing to each one you saved!

I mean, what others have said is right. We eat beef, pork, fish, and I especially know how the chickens are transported and grown living on the Eastern shore of Delaware. Yeah, it’s sick that they eat dogs but, we aren’t much different than them. I don’t agree with it but not much I can say because I refuse to be a vegetarian!

I’ve said it before and will say it again-Dana I agree no animal should be treated cruely food or not but also understand we domesticated the dog and cat for thousands of years to be pets, our guardians, our eyes, find the lost, protect our country by sniffing out drugs, booms etc , emotional and physical support …We made them an extension of ourseves and asked them to trust, depend on us and often work for us and in return we feed, protect and for most of us love them to the end . In this sisuation we as humans have let them down and this is why we take special interest in the dog.”

It isn’t so much about being a vegan or not. The question is can’t we humanly raise meats and butcher them in a quick and painless way. I cannot say eating dog,cat or horse is wrong b/c i do not walk in their shoes. But I can say that raising any animal in a cage or a feed lot of any kind is WRONG!!! Cows, horses etc belong in fields. Americans greed and ever increasing support of eating fast produced food is absolutely no different.

There are plenty of Americans who are also abusive. Look at our slaughter houses. Our farming practices are awful and so many of the animals there are so sick and also lame. Then we’ve got the wonderful (sarcasm) folks who like to leave their dogs outside and chained up, neglected and forgotten. They even forget to feed them and give them water. It’s not just China! It’s a world wide epidemic and what we need is more education in addition to much more compassion for humans AND animals.
Just the other night I was watching something on the news about a dumping site in the next state over and caught on camera were people pulling over, opening car doors and letting their dogs out of the car. Then they would DRIVE AWAY LEAVING THE DOG there! It happens with cats too, hence all the feral cat colonies.
So if you want to talk about savages, you can say it about any country. There is unfortunately, heartbreaking cruelty everywhere. Educate. And by the way, did you notice that the people doing the rescuing were um…CHINESE!!!
The dogs bound for the restuarants are the lucky ones. A few chops and they are dead. The less fortunate are those bred for the fur trade. Chinese know that best quality fur comes from a living animal, so they skin them alive. Dogs are bred because they are easier to keep and push aound because of their instinct to trust himans.

Every label I look at reads-Made in China! Shops with good reputations are all in with China. Its all about money and how much they can get for so cheaply. Well thats exactly what comes out of China, Cheap and Nasty!! Poor animals that endure unimaginable suffering, for someone who just dosent care enough or is just totally ignorant of the goings on is 100% totally unacceptable!!
Its like you learn my thoughts! You appear to grasp a lot about this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I feel that you simply could do with a few percent to force the message house a little bit, however other than that, this is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
