Neighbors watched with anticipation Monday evening as a West Trenton fireman emerged from a burning Hopewell Township home with his helmet cradled upside down in his hands. Reaching a safe distance from the heat of the blaze, he joins his fellow firefighters on the front lawn and pulls precious cargo from his helmet: a newborn puppy that had suffered smoke inhalation in the fire – one of 16 that fire crews rescued from the basement of the burning building.

A makeshift triage system was employed, with canine oxygen masks used to breathe life back into the pups before they were transferred to nearby crates.

Witnesses observed as firefighters searched the home, doused the blaze and provided critical care to the pups. All but one were saved. As of last night, the cause of the fire remained undetermined.
