UK Police Break Into Sweltering Car to Rescue Stuffed Animal

Two London police officers came to the rescue of a dog trapped in a hot car – only to learn that it was a stuffed toy.

stuffed toyThe officers were concerned about the overheating animal after receiving a tip from a member of the public. After arriving on the scene, they made multiple attempts to wake it from its perch in the back seat of the car. When it did not respond, they smashed a window of the Mercedes to free it from the life-threatening heat.

When they were able to reach the dog they realized that their efforts were in vain: the ‘victim’ was a ten dollar stuffed animal.

Owner Gordon Williams returned to his car to find a seat covered in broken glass and a note from the officers. Smashed your window re concern for animal on rear seat.

According to The Daily Telegraph the police force has agreed to pay for the damage to the window.

Williams said he had purchased the toy while vacationing and thought nothing of leaving it in the car. “He’d been living quite happily on the car’s back seat. But I’ve decided he will be safer sleeping on a chair in my kitchen,” he said.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire Police said “The call was made in good faith by a passer-by. In this case officers believed a dog could be suffering due to the heat of the day and its life was potentially at risk, so felt there was no other option but to enter the vehicle.

We will be speaking to the owner of the vehicle about paying for the damage. This is a perfect example of why drivers need to think about what they leave on view in their car, both in terms of other people’s perception of the objects and in a bid to deter opportunist thieves.”
