12 Year Old Hero Saves Dog from Attack by Abusers

255 commentsUpdate (6/1/12): This afternoon the Wellington SPCA presented a Bravery Award to Damon Boyer-Marwood, during his school assembly at Brandon Intermediate in Cannons Creek. Damon has made headlines around the world after he bravely rescued a terrier dog named Rose from being beaten by a group of youths last week. Damon also received a Mayoral Commendation from Mayor Nick Leggett.

The Wellington SPCA says it intends to honor a 12 year old boy with a bravery award for coming to the rescue of a dog that was being attacked by a group of schoolyard bullies. Damon Boyer-Marwood, 12, was walking home from Brandon Intermediate School in Cannons Creek on Thursday when he heard an animal cry. Moving closer to the sound, he found a group of children holding down a small female dog and taking turns kicking it. They also took turns beating it with a cricket bat.
Infuriated by what he saw, the brave child stepped in and told the group of boys to leave the dog alone and go away. At first they resisted, but his conviction was such that after a brief standoff, they released the dog and fled.
“They stood there for a bit, then they ran inside,” he said.
Damon took the battered dog to a friend’s house before calling the SPCA to try to identify an owner. A microchip scan turned up a name and address, and the dog was returned to owner Sosefina Leota yesterday. She insisted on meeting the hero who saved her dog, saying “I want to thank him from my heart, I want to know his face.”
Damon’s grandmother, Jenny Marwood, is proud, and says the kind-hearted boy saved the dog’s life. “It makes you wonder what would have happened if he didn’t step in.”
In a written statement, Wellington SPCA inspector Kaycee Polkinghorne said an investigation is underway. “Because of the ages, there’s not a lot we can do prosecution-wise, but it does reinforce the importance of having education in schools about things like this. You just have to to wonder what’s going on to make them think this is acceptable behavior.”
Polkinghorne praised Damon for his moral fortitude, and said that he hopes others will follow his example. “I just hope there are more kids out there who are willing to stand up for what’s right and not be afraid to say it.”

That kid is extremely brave to be 12 years old and confront 4 people one of which had a cricket bat. He is a hero in my eyes. People are sick. I am glad there are good ones out there.

This is such a disturbing story. To think that these children are capable of such evil is very scary. I shudder to think of what they will do next. Action needs to be taken. Thank god, for that amazing young man.

I think that what the boy did to stop them was wonderful! You don’t see many kids or adults standing up for whats right much these days. However you do have to look at the reason to why the kids were hurting the dog in the first place. Seems to me like whoever is raising them isn’t the best parent / guardian and their behavior is most likely a learned behavior ( meaning they have seen it done before) or like what was said before maybe they are being abused and this is their way of expressing what they know: Violence.

To be fair asked the pet owner why the dog is out, if this was intentional you could charge him with neglect or abuse, then charge separately those bully kids not their parents. However, those heroic act by Damian, will be recognized by everybody, keep up the good job kid, I salute you buddy.

There is nothing bigger than the heart of an animal rescuer – so happy that he is being honored for his heroics.
This should really be “front page” news in all media – especially for the bravery of one young man but also for the cruelty and low morality of those who would gang up and beat a helpless animal. – This is worse than bullying — it comes from the low standards of people who set this example in their home-life (of those perpetrators) — They should all be made accountable and punished.

I agree with those who have said go after the parents. Charge them with animal cruelty. Make it a large fine. But more to the point, tell these parents what they should know, which is that their child is a budding psycopath who needs help. Children who abuse animals grow up to become sadists who abuse humans. It is a well documented fact that this cruel behaviour escalates to humans. Next step for this type of sick child is small humans….you know the ones we call children… Thats who they will torture next. Put the brats into a psychiatric facility.

I hope this story DOES get picked up by a national news media.the only way to get the kind of punishment that torturing/hurting an animal deserves is to get the laws changed so that it is more than just a slap on the wrist. Kudos to the young man and I hope he retains his tender heart. Those kids who were hurting that dog need counseling and intervention.
Justice should prevail Remeber the case of the 2 young English boys who were killing cats? Well this wasn’t enough so they decided to kill a person to see what it was like. As a result a 2 year old boy was brutually murdered by them. This cruelty has to be handled now before these bullies decide to go further and statistics show that it does advance from animals to humans. The next to be attacked could be your pet or your ch
ild/grandchild. Do something now before its too late!

So the abusers were “too young to prosecute?!” What the hell does that mean? These didn’t sound like 5 yr olds – they were damn sure old enough to know better! How about a little community service and some education?
