A remarkable program with an eight year history of success is making news for pairing inmates and dogs at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Faribault. After their training, the pups will be given to people with disabilities.
The program, called “Anything’s Pawsable”, was implemented to help make unwanted shelter dogs in the area more adoptable while transforming the lives of their handlers. Can Do Canines matches the specially-trained dogs with humans who will rely on them heavily.
Inmates earn the right to enter the program, and those selected say the experience changes them for the better. “It’s a down payment. I owe a lot of pay back for what I’ve done in my past,” said inmate Greg Wickman.
