stevie wonderThe newest member of the Albuquerque Isotopes baseball team is an adopted blind dog named Stevie Wonder. Found wandering as a stray, Stevie was recently adopted by Isotopes pitcher John Ely.

Ely met Stevie at Watermelon Ranch, an animal rescue in Bernalillo County, and when he and his teammates heard about the dog’s troubled past, they agreed that he needed to be adopted. Stevie was found with one eye missing, and another so infected that it had to be removed.

Ely took Stevie home that day, but his good fortune did not end there – moved by his tale of woe, the entire team has taken him in as one of their own. They also gave him a job: Stevie is now the team’s official mascot. Once unwanted, the stoic survivor is now in big demand with adoring fans, and Ely says he loves his new job.

“He’s got no eyes, but he’s about as happy as they get,” said Ely.
