116 commentsWith all of the recent fallout surrounding the Romney dog roof ride, it’s hard not to cringe at the sight of a dog sitting on top of a moving car. That said, in discussions there were a fair number of dissenters who said the dog probably enjoyed the trip. We think that’s pushing it, but what do you think?

A 27 year old woman died just last week while car surfing in my area. Yes it’s moronic for both human and animals.

Even if the dog is used to it or even “enjoys” the ride, it’s incredibly unsafe. What if the dog is startled and jumps off the moving vehicle? What if the driver has to break fast? Stupid and unnecessary.
hard to put the safety issue aside; however, i don’t think it’s right. just because your dog enjoys something, does not make it right. Donovan loves laying in the sun but he will lay there until he over heats. both boyz luv to eat but will eat until they pop ect.

Looks like some Eastern European backwater country…dodging cows in the road. Irresponsible driving and figure these people may have issues putting bread on the table let alone feeding a dog. If this was the USA, someone would have (or should have) called the cops on them for driving with a dog like that. Wherever the heck this is, it is unfortunately most likley a commonplace occurance.

Easy, it’s a dumb ass thing to do but you can tell it isn’t the US and for all I know this dog is getting treated far better overall than other dogs in his country with all the rampant abuse on this planet done towards dogs and animals. And no, sitting on the roof is not the same as riding in the bed of a truck although that is not good either but better than balancing on a roof with no sides.

At the speed he was going, that dog was safer than had he been in the car at a higher speed.
The dog doesn’t seem upset or stressed so I would say he’s enjoying himself but its still not safe. If they had to break fast or swerve he would go flying off

I call it cruelty, but I also think it’s irresponsible to have dogs in the back of a pick up. I once saw a dog thrown from the back of one and dragged down the road by his leash that was tied to the back. The driver was clueless. It was just horrible. You can’t assume because they have better balance due to four legs and reflexes that they can always handle this sort of thing.

This is a hard one for me to call. That dog looks like he’s sitting up there of his own free will. He’s not in panic mode or trying to get down… unlike being trapped in a crate. I mean, my dog wouldn’t be up there, but this is different than trapping him in a crate, strapping him to the hood of the car, going so fast that he has an accident and then hosing him down after that… I can’t find too much common ground between these two incidents.
That car also doesn’t look new so how long ago and what country was this filmed in?
I personally cringe at the idea of dogs in the back of pick-ups, but having grown up with dogs in the south, I also just happen to know how much dogs and children love to ride in the back of pick-ups. I’m almost 32 and I remember doing it. I don’t know how long it’s been illegal, but a lot of us grew up doing stuff like that and we survived. And I have officially hit the “back in my day button!” Damn.
(I’m saying the above with absolute sarcasm, BTW)

Sandra, it does matter what country it is because in some countries dogs are tortured for entertainment, etc as a cultural thing so being cared for but riding on the roof is better than being starved, tortured, neglected and abused BUT it is a stupid thing to do overall and not acceptable or cool.

Every day of the week Australian Cattle Dogs are ride on the back of ATV and Utes sometimes going much faster.. and you know what they love it.! If you have ever been on a Hay Ride you would know and love the feeling to.
