Dog is man’s best friend, as the saying goes, but you kind of had to doubt the truth of that statement in country crooner Craig Morgan’s video, “This Ole Boy.”
The pesky pooch in the funny video prevented Morgan and his on-screen love interest, actress Angie Harmon (Rizzoli and Isles and Law and Order) from enjoying a little one-on-one time. Basco, a German Shorthaired Pointer, pawed his way between the couple as they tried to grab some romantic moments together. In the end, though, Morgan is able to win over the dog and the girl.
Life With Dogs: It didn’t look like the dog was man’s best friend. Why didn’t he like you?
Morgan: “He was just ‘acting’ like he didn’t like me. Was a really sweet dog!”
Life With Dogs: The old saying is to never work with dogs or children. Did that hold true here?
Morgan: “Most old sayings have some root of truth. I think it is just they can be a little unpredictable, but it really makes the set more fun.”
Life With Dogs: It seems like your love interest was more interested in the dog than you. What’s up with that?
Morgan: “That was the plot of the video. It was shot from the dog’s perspective. Made for an interesting story and great twist to the song.
Life With Dogs: He gave you a run for the money. How did you or the dog’s trainer get the dog to chase you around the set? Were you hiding some dog food on you somewhere?
Morgan: “Animals love me. I guess I have that certain magnetism.”
Life With Dogs: Apparently, this dog could be won over with a glass of wine. What was the vintage?
Morgan: It wasn’t really wine. I think the vintage was Welch’s.”
Life With Dogs: Did the dog belong to you or Angie Harmon or was he brought in from an outside source?
Morgan: “The video director found the perfect co-star for us.”
Life With Dogs: You’re on the road a lot on tour and taping your television show, “All Access Outdoors.” Do you own a dog?
Morgan: “Yes, I have a Black Lab. Her name is Sam, and she’s 4. When I’m home, she’s my buddy and goes where I go.”
Life With Dogs: Do you consider yourself a dog person? Do you have a special story with one of the dogs in your life, past or present?
Morgan: “I am a dog person and have owned many dogs. Kreese was a Golden Retriever, and she was such a special dog. She would dive underwater to fetch rocks and would bring back the exact one I threw in the river. She was also featured in one of my album shoots.”
Life With Dogs: You served ten years on active duty in the Army and nearly seven years in Army Reserve. Were they any times in the military when you saw dogs helping out in an heroic act?
Morgan: “In Panama, during the ousting of Noriega in 1989, the bomb sniffing dog found a grenade. Then, humans got to deal with it! Dogs are always assisting our military and police force. They are special animals.”
Life With Dogs: One silly question–If you could be a dog, what kind would you be and why?
Morgan: “I’d be a German Shepherd police attack dog, so I could catch the bad guys.“
