At the Best Friends Pet Center in Shrewsbury, NJ, Megan, a 9-year-old Golden Retriever, jumps over a hurdle as she participates in the week-long Doggy Olympics. The hurdle isn’t as high as what we’ve seen in the London Olympics but that doesn’t matter to Megan. She’s having fun and that’s all that she cares about.

Sasha Armstrong, manager of the center, says, “The best thing about canine competition is that dogs really don’t care who wins and who loses — they just love playing the games. Our doggy day campers love to run, jump, and wrestle, so we often hold special events. We thought a Doggy Olympics was a perfect way to celebrate the London Games.”

Participating in this week’s Doggy Olympics are German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, English bulldogs, French poodles, Siberian huskies, a Kerry Blue terrier from Ireland, and of course, the USA is represented by the All-American mutts.

The canine athletes are wrestling, running, and well, roaming around at times, in hopes of bringing home the gold. They’re jumping through hoops – literally – as they participate in the floor exercises. Playing water polo and diving for bones in the bone-shaped pool is a particularly popular event among the pooches. There has been a lot of scrambling for the ball, and a fair share of touchdowns, on the soccer field. Track and Field competition has been fierce, but friendly, for the medal in the high jump and hurdles. The winners will be awarded medals and treats at the closing ceremony.
