kabangFinally, Kabang, the heroic shepherd mix horrifically injured while saving the lives of two little girls begins her trip to The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the University of California, in Davis, CA for the first ever maxillofacial repair surgery performed on a dog.

The first leg of her journey will be to Manila, where she will stay for one to two weeks with Dr. Ed Unson. During her stay in Manila, she will be acclimatized to being without her puppy, Kabang Jr. and her family. Her owner, Rudy Bunggal does not have a passport and cannot travel with her.

The surgery is not merely cosmetic. Kabang’s family love her just as she is, but realize that unless her wound is closed and allowed to fully heal she runs the risk of infection, fevers and even pneumonia. She currently takes antibiotics which will eventually become ineffective. The expectation is that her quality of life will dramatically improve.

Dog lovers have responded around the world to donate money for her surgery and airfare. Her care is expected to cost around $20,000.00. Donations so far have raised about $11,000.00. The Bunggal family make only about $3.50 a day, so they have no way of paying for Kabang’s surgery and airfare.
