Tethered Dog Who Gave up on Life Finally Knows Happiness

A Harlequin Great Dane named Ellie Grace lived a life wherein she knew only suffering.  She was confined to a heavy chain, surrounded by a stagnant water and mud pit.  Every day was the same, and there was nothing to look forward to.  Her bed was a muddy wooden board.  But now when she lies down it is on a warm, soft bed.

This is all thanks to Helping Animals Reach Tomorrow (HART).  When they found Ellie Grace, she had lay down and given up on life.  She was too depressed and hopeless to eat, or even stand.

HART rescuers asked her owner if they would consider surrendering her, and they said yes.  Ellie Grace was unshackled and immediately whisked away.  Away from a life of filth and solitude, and into a new life of comfort and love.

For the first time in her wretched existence, people bathed her and made a fuss over her.  When she was clean and dry, she was allowed to rest her aching bones on a nice, fluffy couch.  She was introduced to other dogs.  In her past life, she could only see dogs while tethered.  Now she can sniff and play and frolic with them.

In addition to liberating Ellie Grace, HART also educated her former owners on how destructive it is to leave dogs tethered.  Thankfully, the former owners were happy to be enlightened.  The other dogs on the property were released from their chains and given kennels with soft hay inside.

In Louisiana and Mississippi it is common for people to chain their dogs, and most residents don’t see it as harmful – it is just their way of life.  These dogs often have just enough slack on their cables to lie down, so they are surrounded by their own waste.  They aren’t even sheltered from the blistering heat, driving rain or bitter cold winters.

HART volunteers rely on donations so they can continue their heroic work of unfettering dogs from their chains and owners from their mentalities that dogs are property.   At Life With Dogs we know that our fans would never treat their dogs in this manner, but we need to band together and spread the word to those who do treat their dogs like this.  Animal abuse comes in all forms.  If it’s a condition that you would not be comfortable in, it’s safe to assume that a dog wouldn’t like it, either.

Ellie Grace is doing wonderfully now that she has been adopted by HART rescuers Cappy and Alexa Jeffers.  She is thriving and enjoys playing with her new siblings.

I am surprised that this dog hung on for as long as she did. I don’t care where you live, this treatment of an animal is NOT acceptable. You don’t love your pet if you would do this to it. Glad she now has the life she has always deserved.

It is really sad and disheartening to know that we have people who call themselves Americans that do this to animals as well as other humans!?

I grew up in the Midwest and the south and you just cannot get through to some of these people.

    So happy for Ellie!

I’m sorry but you have to be an absolute moron to not understand that this is not the way any living creature should be forced to live its life. People should not have to be “enlightened”. If you’re that stupid you really have no business owning a pet… or having kids for that matter.

    GREAT DANE MOMMA

I am a proud momma of 2 Great Danes, The True Gentle Giant, one of which is a rescue himself. He was in sad condition when we took him and has almost put on 50 # since, at just a yr. old. I am very happy she has found a wonderful home. Kudos to the new and rightful family and to those whom saved her life. It is our choice to have a pet, not the animals. Makes you wonder sometimes how people could be so cruel…

I’m from Louisiana and honestly can’t tell you of one person I know who chains their dogs up or who thinks its ok. I’m sure there are some who do, but please don’t make generalized statements. My dogs live in my house, not on a chain.

If people are this stupid to see this dog, day after day in those conditions and not feel anything – then they should be banned from owning dogs forever
    .
    Heartless.

Thank goodness she was saved from that hell hole.

PS I watch pit bulls and parolees and see pretty much on every episode where dogs are dumped, tied to a pole and left to die, chained and left out in the heat etc etc in Louisiana. Oh and don’t forget bait dogs and dog fighting. Its a major problem however not all people there or anywhere else for that matter are like that obviously… there’s good, there’s bad and there’s ugly ALL over. We must be making a difference and we should never stop trying. Sad to say but many people truly are this stupid and don’t think anything is wrong with leaving a dog tied up outside. I don’t see how but its one thing to truly be THAT stupid vs being cruel and inhumane and knowing what you’re doing is so wrong. Both are wrong but some DO learn just like people being stupid about pit bulls. They year and see what the media etc believe so they believe it is that they are vicious and can tear the skin off of animals and people until someone that knows better shows them differently or even better when a pit saves their life or s loved ones life etc. In 2013 you’d think people would know better!
