A 77 year old Charlotte man has been reunited with his dog “Baby” after she disappeared following a break-in at his home.  Devastated, Robert Ward didn’t sleep that night wondering whether he would ever see his beloved dog again.  But then he got a call informing him that a dog matching Baby’s description had been turned in to a local animal shelter and he raced down to reclaim her.

The theft occurred on Monday evening while Ward was out to dinner, and Baby, a Pomeranian, wasn’t the only thing that went missing.   Six antique firearms were stolen from Ward’s home, but that loss was relatively inconsequential compared to Baby being gone.  Ward’s older dog Nikita is Baby’s mother and was a gift to his late wife 14 years ago.  They have been inseparable ever since.

“Nikita has just been staying under the bed, hard to get out, she won’t eat.  I’ve been up all night.  I can’t sleep,” said Ward.  “They get to you.  They get to your heart,” he said, breaking down in tears.  “It broke my heart to know they would take her, when she needed her medicine,” he cried.  “They will be no questions on my part, all I want is my dog back.”

It was with immense relief that he took Baby in his arms once again.  She was turned into the animal shelter after she was found wandering along a busy road on Tuesday night, more than a mile from home.  Ward doesn’t know how she got there but is certain she could not have walked that far on her own.  “I just want to thank the good Samaritan who brought her to the shelter,” he said.
