In May 2013, Mexico City hosted a large Canine Adoption Fair at Álvaro Obregón, where 120 dogs of different breeds were lucky enough to find their forever homes.

Sixty-three different animal rescue organizations participated in this event. Leonel Luna Estrada, event organizer, said the fair was just another way to support this year’s campaign, “Be a Responsible Pet Owner,” which kicked off in January.

All dogs participating in the fair were in excellent health and up-to-date with their vaccines.

Monica Hernández, animal rescuer with Sí, Esperanza Animal!, spoke directly to those present at the fair. She asked attendees to adopt a pet instead of purchasing it from pet shops.

“The day you adopt an animal, you will be saving two lives: you’ll save the life of the animal you’re adopting and the life of the next animal we will rescue,” said Hernández.

Fairs like this one are being used to educate the public on the importance of adopting animals from local shelters. Organizers hope that more people become interested animals in need and help a homeless animal find a forever home.
