Last December, and for more than seven days, a dog in the city of Iida, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, waited for his owners to come back for him. They never did.

According to Rocket News 24 a local couple in their 70s spotted the dog on the side of the road while they were driving. The dog was described as “sad-looking” and he refused to leave the area even though the temperatures at the time were freezing cold.

The couple who first encountered the dog felt sorry for him. “He must be hungry,” they said. “If he’s simply been abandoned, wait as he might, his master almost definitely isn’t coming back.”

Seven days later and after many local residents called to report the dog and ask authorities to help him, the Ida Health and Welfare Office went out collect the dog.

Fortunately, the dog willingly went into a cage that had been place near his waiting spot. After being examined by a vet, the dog was found to be relatively in good health. He was held by rescuers for 10 more days and then placed up for adoption.

According to a Japanese website, on Dec. 25, 2012, the rescue organization started accepting adoption applications for the dog. A local man (58) who had recently lost his own pet was the lucky adopter.
