Extreme Makeover: Doggy Edition

We hear about people that sign up for TV shows or local giveaways hoping to be the lucky winners of a makeover. As audience members, we watch in delight and amazement how the participants – who at some point looked like a hot mess – are transformed by hair stylists, make-up artists and wardrobe consultants. The end result is always an individual looking amazing and unrecognizable from the “before” shot. Shelter dogs also benefit from makeovers and many times reinventing their looks is their only ticket to a forever home.

Meet Maeby, a Shih Tzu/Cocker Spaniel Mix found as a stray in Chicago.

This little dog is approximately 4-years old and was found by a Chicago Animal Care and Control officer on June 15th. Five days later, the good-hearted people from One Tail at a Time (OTAT) were assessing some dogs for rescue and they just knew they had to taker her in as well.

“Our heart broke for her,” said Anna Friedman, rescue manager for OTAT.

Maeby was severely matted and had fleas and ticks, but aside from her looks she was in good health. OTAT groomed the lucky lady, treated her for fleas and ticks, spayed her and microchipped her. Now she is sporting her new look and with her sweet temperament, she is just waiting to meet her forever humans and capture their hearts.

“[Maeby is] wonderful. She, even when matted, was so sweet and tried to wag her little tail,” said Friedman. “Now that she is feeling better she is even more social and sweet. The thing that stands out the most is her sweet and docile temperament; even though humans have clearly failed her in the past she is so eager to love and snuggle.”

Now that Maeby is looking marvelous she needs a family that will appreciate her and show her what the good life is all about. The new and improved Maeby tends to be a little timid at first, therefore young children in her forever family would likely not be the most ideal match.

If you are interested in adopting Maeby, check out her Petfinder profile and contact OTAT. You can reach them through Facebook or by emailing Anna Friedmand at [email protected].
