Stabbing Suspect Surrenders Twenty-Nine Chihuahuas

Gerald Mathews from Southeast Portland surrendered 29 chihuahuas after a standoff that took place last week, at his home on Southeast 26th Avenue.

Police say the 48-year-old man is accused of stabbing a 16-year-old boy who Mathews found in a marijuana plot the homeonwer was growing in his backyard.

According to a report done by KOIN.com, after the standoff police entered Mathews home and found hundreds of marijuana plants, three guns and 26 Chihuahuas.

Multnomah County Animal Services took in the canines, 21 adults and 9 puppies, all in good health.

A statement on Multnomah County Animal Services’ web page reads as follows:
“It appears that the dogs were cared for in accordance with the standards specified by the Multnomah County Ordinance. However, in their best interest, all of the chihuahuas have been brought to our shelter for care and placed under protective custody.”
