spiritThirteen years after surviving horrific abuse as a puppy, Spirit is doing well and continuing to help other dogs.

Around Halloween of 2000 Spirit was left to die in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana after abusers lit her on fire. She was found close to death and would require extensive medical treatment to survive.

“The whole top part of her body was basically skin,” said Kristi Eggers, who is Spirit’s owner.

Spirit is now fourteen and on Saturday she walked in the Howl-O-Ween dog walk event at Oak Hill Cemetery. The event helps raise money and awareness for the Spirit Medical Fund, which was named in honor of Spirit.

When Spirit was discovered after her abuse she was clinging to life and required costly medical treatment. The community came together to pay for her treatment and the Spirit Medical Fund was born. Over the past decade it has helped other stray, homeless and abandoned animals that are treated at the Evansville-Vanderburgh Animal Care & Control.

Spirit fought to survive and has gone on to live a happy life with Eggers. Her fight has helped save other dogs just like her and give them a chance at a long, happy life.

“She’s a happy go lucky dog, she’s just another dog that wants just to play and have fun,” said Eggers.
