When Amanda Giese of Panda Paws Rescue rescued Boxer puppy Duncan Lou Who she was greatly criticized for her decision to amputate the puppy’s deformed rear legs.

Duncan Lou Who was born with severely deformed rear legs and pelvis. The bones in his legs were completely fused and there was no possibility a surgery would correct his birth defect.

“Duncan is my hero,” Giese told King 5 News. “For those who said I was an animal abuser for removing his severely deformed legs to give him a chance, for those who sent me hate mail and doubted this boy, suggesting we should just euthanize him – you are wrong. Thank goodness this baby boy landed in our loving home!”

The decision to amputate Duncan’s rear legs came after consulting veterinarians. The surgery was the recommended solution for Duncan to have a better chance in life, and what a great solution it was.

Since performing the surgery at 12-weeks-old, Duncan has become an active happy puppy who does not behave any different than a four-legged dog. Duncan runs and plays with his canine brothers like any regular puppy would.

The two-legged fur ball of energy was also fitted for a custom wheelchair that he will start using soon. He is undergoing hydrotherapy to help straighten his spine, and receives massage therapy as well as physical therapy.

“Right now [Duncan] is adjusting to using a cart because he has gone 16 weeks without one and thinks he doesn’t need a cart,” commented Giese.

There is nothing stopping this happy puppy, and even though he had no family of his own when rescued, he found a special place in Giese’s heart and she decided to welcome him as an official member of her family.

“I cannot describe the gratitude, the inspiration, the humility, the joy, the pride I get from our rescue,” said Giese. “Duncan will continue to face every obstacle to come with grace and perseverance. He will change lives and he will be the light at the darkest hour for many because he is the definition of life.”

Duncan we are so happy you are not letting your disability put you down. You are a special dog and we don’t say this because of your disability but because of your take on life. Congratulations on being adopted and thank you for showing us that no matter what cards life deals you, there is always something good to smile about.
