On New Year’s Eve, as Hearts United for Animals (HUA) in Auburn, Nebr., was closing for the day when a woman came in requesting help for an injured dog near railroad tracks. Immediately volunteers headed out to help the dog in need.
When volunteers arrived at the scene they found a large, scared dog that was not moving.
“We think the dog was lying still because she had just given up,” read a post on HUA’s Facebook wall.
The female canine was named Eve in honor of the day she found.
It is uncertain how Eve got hurt, but when rescued she had a cut under her left eye and a hurt hind leg.
Using canned food, volunteers were able to coax her into a car and they transported her to Urgent Pet Care in Omaha.
There, veterinarians examined her, took x-rays, and discovered she had a serious pelvic and SI joint fracture.
“[Her injuries are] consistent with being hit by a car or possibly bouncing off of the side of the train. She is thin and dehydrated and her heart sounds are muffled,” said HUA.
Veterinarians started Eve on IV fluids and pain medications and hoped she would stabilize before her scheduled surgery to repair her fracture later this week.
Eve was lucky a Good Samaritan found her on New Year’s Eve and wanted to help her. She is still not out of the woods but it is on her way to recovery.
Rescuers were concerned for Eve because she refused to eat, yet this is normal in dog’s that have suffered trauma. However, having an appetite is a good health sign.
Upon closer examination it was discovered Eve has two broken teeth.
“Eve will stay at the Urgent Pet Care until Thursday (Jan. 2, 2014) when she will be transferred to the orthopedic surgeon,” said HUA. “Her teeth may be taken care of before then if she becomes stable enough for an operation.”
