There are lots of videos of dogs howling at sirens, and one in particular has been making its rounds in the last few days. Some find it annoying, and others cute. But it makes you wonder, why do dogs do it? The obvious answer is that the high-frequency sound bothers their ears and they’re letting you know. But dogs are creatures that are very attuned to the feelings and behaviors of others. Dogs may hear that noise and believe because it sounds similar to howling, it is made for the same reason they cry. So maybe they’re not howling at the siren, but along with it to show their camaraderie, much the way we might salute a soldier.
