On Jan. 22, 2014, a Lauderdale County, Miss., home went up in flames around 3:30 a.m. No one was hurt in the fire all thanks to Hershey, the family pet, who alerted his owners of the danger they faced.
The home’s residents, two children and an adult male, were asleep when the fire started. The smart, small, black dog barked, waking up all family members. All humans were able to escape unharmed but unfortunately, the canine remained trapped in the burning house.
Fire rescuers were called and thanks to them Hershey was saved from the fire.
According to Allan Dover, Lauderdale County fire coordinator, the family is alive today thanks to the hero dog.
“I’m not sure they would have been alerted. So I credit that all three of these persons were saved by this dog,” Dover told WTOK News.
Hershey was in respiratory distress when firefighters found him inside the home. He was pulled to safety, given oxygen, and was later taken to a veterinary clinic.
The hero canine made a full recovery and was released back to his owners that same afternoon.
