We first brought you the story of Lucky, a 9-year-old, homeless, Mastiff mix dog that lived on the streets of Los Angeles with his dedicated owner Alfredo Longoria. After a 6-month battle with cancer, the companion pet lost the battle and his owner knew it was time to let his pet go.

“R.I.P. our sweet and oh so famous Lucky,” said Jasmin Dustin, founder for Cause4Paws. “Alfredo made the choice to let Lucky run free to the rainbow bridge [on Jan. 20, 2014, at 9 p.m. He has asked everyone to please light a candle in honor of Lucky.”

Dustin and her organization had been helping the pair with the dog’s medications and food. At the same time, and thanks to many donations received, Longoria and his dog spend Christmas and the last days of the pet’s life in a hotel room, instead of on the lonely streets of LA.

The dog had been diagnosed with bone cancer and as the tumor on his front leg grew, it made it difficult for him to move around on his own. His owner, who loved his companion dog unconditional, dedicated his time to the pet’s care.

Cause4Paws hoped Longoria would be able to find a job while staying at the hotel, but due to the seriousness of Lucky’s illness, his owner was unable to step away.

“[Alfredo] is so beyond devastated,” said Dustin. “I’m going to try and continue to raise money for him so he doesn’t go back on the streets. He wasn’t able to leave Lucky at the hotel room to look for a job as Lucky was just too sick. I think now the pieces will fall into place. He is very intelligent so I hope it won’t take too long for things do start coming together.”

The rescue organization planned to bury Lucky at a local pet cemetery where Longoria will be able to visit.

If you would like to help the homeless man get back on his feet after losing his best friend, consider making an online donation.

“We can’t thank you enough for following and supporting their journey,” said Dustin.

Lucky, you will always be remembered.
