On Jan. 16, 2014, Truckee Meadows firefighters from Reno, Nev., rescued a dog that fell into an icy pond.

According to hero rescuers, it was 8:00 a.m. when they spotted the black dog swimming for its life in the pond located behind their fire station near the Hidden Valley golf course.

The dog’s name is Cosmo. If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of firefighters and their successful rescue plan, the canine wouldn’t be alive today.

Capt. Casey Jaggers, firefighter Jon Sieben, and paramedic-firefighter Ryan Whitlock led the rescue mission.

“We got [Sieben] hooked up with safety ropes, and he crawled out across the ice,” Jaggers told RGJ.com. “He assisted the dog back on the ice, and they made their way back to the owner.”

The icy waters got the best out of Cosmo. The extreme temperature lowered the pet’s body temperature and when firefighters reached him, the dog was barely fighting for his life.

Once back on dry land, Cosmo was reunited with his grateful owner.

The rescue was captured on video. Watch it here.
