It is indisputable that most, if not all Life With Dogs fans would like to see puppy mills made completely illegal. Sadly, they are a reality for many dogs.  But we can fight to end them, and if we cannot not end them today, we can ensure that all puppy mill dogs are given proper care, housing, food and medical treatment.

A letter to the editor of the Syracuse Post-Standard Newspaper:

Dogs trapped in New York’s numerous commercial breeding facilities typically spend their lives in tiny, cramped, wire-floored cages that can legally be stacked on top of each other, often outdoors, with no protection from the elements. Expressly prohibiting municipalities from intervening at the local level, state laws have failed to protect these dogs even though local governments, nonprofit animal shelters — and taxpayers — are forced to absorb the costs of these unscrupulous breeders when cruelty seizures, subsequent sheltering costs for relinquished animals, and legal proceedings become necessary.

State regulations are failing these animals, and USDA oversight of wholesale breeders is consistently underfunded, providing only very minimal standards. Shipping and health certificates plainly show that New York pet stores regularly purchase dogs from breeders with a history of egregious violations of the Federal Animal Welfare Act.

New York State passed A.740-A/S.3753-A, which would enable local governments to exercise home rule powers to regulate breeders and pet stores throughout the state.

Remarkably, time is running out, and the fate of New York’s dogs is now in the hands of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has the power to sign this bill into law. Please tell the governor it’s time to stop putting profit over animal protection! We must enact this legislation to reduce animal suffering, and protect consumers by authorizing municipalities to pass more stringent pet dealer laws.

Time is of the essence! This bill must be signed by Jan. 10. Please contact the governor by phone at (518) 474-8390, via Twitter at @NYGovCuomo, or by email at http://www.governor.ny.gov/contact/GovernorContactForm.php.
