callie maeSeveral months ago a dog named Callie Mae had to have one of her legs amputated. Now she is helping to comfort people who have undergone similar ordeals at a prosthetics and orthotics office in Westport, Massachusetts.

In October Callie Mae, an 8-year-old Lab, came to the MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center. She had nerve and tissue damage to her leg that caused her to drag her leg which led to painful injuries. Her owner surrendered her, unable to give Callie Mae the financial support and time she needed to recover from her injury.

Kathleen and Bob Easterbrooks adopted Callie Mae and she started coming to their prosthetics and orthotics Office to comfort patients. The business fits patients with braces and artificial limbs. Callie often stays by patient’s sides as they endure therapy sessions and is a friendly face for them. In the few months Callie Mae has been there she has made a huge impact.

“Callie’s constant presence is immeasurably beneficial to patients who often cannot shake hands or rise to greet, but who take tremendous comfort when Callie stations herself by their side,” said Kathleen Easterbrooks. “It’s almost like she understands, given her own amputation, how challenging it can be for human patients who are trying to make their way in the world despite their disabilities.”
