On Feb. 5, 2014, Lisa Schott and her 12-year-old son Noah, from Gloucester, Md., went sledding near the Babson Reservoir. They had brought along Cooper, their 2-year-old Great Pyrenees, but their moment of fun turned into a frightening episode when their pet ran out onto the snow-filled reservoir and fell into the icy waters.
Cooper is a disabled dog the Schotts rescued from Tennessee just last year. His hind legs are not too strong and his owners weren’t sure if he would be able to swim and fight for his life while trapped in the cold waters.
“I heard splashing in the water and saw his little head bobbing in the water,” Lisa Schott told Gloucester Daily Times.
At the time of the accident the worried mother and pet owner had no cell phone with her. Schott had to run back home to call for help. Meanwhile, she asked Noah to stay on the shore and just watch Cooper.
It took about 15 minutes for Schott to get back to the reservoir and when she got there she witnessed when the dog pulled himself out of the icy reservoir. The Schotts called the pet over them but the canine was in shock and instead of coming over to them he ran away.
By now rescuers had arrived and they helped reunite the worried family with their pet.
Cooper had run into the woods but got tangled in some brushes, that’s when firefighters were able to approach the scared dog, secure him and bring him back to his family.
The pet didn’t suffer any injuries from the time he spent submerged in the water. By that same afternoon, he was comfortably sleeping in the comfort of his home.
