Matt Bennett, from Tampa, Fla., went out for a walk this morning with his dog Nico near Vinoy Park, when their peaceful walk turned into a water rescue.

The playful canine was intrigued by some birds and decided to chase them away. The happy-go-lucky dog by ran after the birds on a path that ended at a sea wall, but instead of stopping at the end of the path, Nico jumped off the wall and fell into the sea.

Bennett worried about his dog jumped right after the pet. The pet owner was able to save the dog’s life by keeping Nico’s head above water. However, they were both stranded in the water with nowhere to reach safe land.

Fortunately for the dog and his owner, a witness saw them plunge into the sea and called 911.

The Coast Guard answered the emergency call and a boat was dispatched to the area where the four-legged friend and his loving owner awaited rescue.

Once Bennet and Nico were safe on land St. Pete Fire Rescue placed them inside an ambulance and paramedics examined them for injuries. Fortunately, both human and pet were uninjured and are expected to do just fine after their adventurous plunge onto the sea.
