Zeke, a mix breed dog, was found as a stray in Dekalb County, Georgia, when he was only four months old. At that young age, he had already experience horrible abuse at the hands of his humans. With the use of scissors, his look was altered when his ears were appallingly and painfully cropped by amateur’s hands.
Friends of Dekalb Animals (FODA) rescued Zeke from the shelter and helped him heal from his horrific ear crop job. He also had a torn cranial crucient ligament on his right rear leg, but thanks to Dr. Corse at Northlake Veterinary Surgery, the canine underwent surgery and has since fully recovered.
Today Zeke is about 15 months old and he continues to wait for his forever home.
“I think he is having a hard time getting adopted because he suffers from people thinking he is a full Pit bull, but he is a Boxer/Lab/Pit bull mix,” said Lizz Dorsey, Zeke’s head volunteer. “He is also black so he suffers from black dog syndrome and his cropped ears are not helping him.”
Even though Zeke has been made too look menacing, he is far from being a vicious dog. He is dog, cat, and kid friendly, and he is devoted to pleasing his human.
“He just waits for his foster mom to tell him what do to,” Dorsey said.
During the canine’s time with FODA, only two adoption applications have come in. Unfortunately, neither of the interested adoptive homes turned out to be a great matches for Zeke, and so he continues in foster care waiting for his perfect home.
Currently, Zeke’s foster mom is a college student who will go back to school on July 18th and unfortunately she can’t take him to campus with her. This patient, people-please dog will soon lose the loving home environment he has flourished in, and if another foster home doesn’t step up to taken him in, he will be boarded.
Even though the friendly canine will be safe and properly cared for at a boarding facility, the ideal situation would be to place him in a forever or another foster home soon.
“He has had the most unique social experience,” Dorsey said. “He has been in many different environments (boarding, foster care, doggy day care, diving tournaments, parades, etc.), so he will be a great pet. He is just amazing, but no one has stepped up to say ‘that is my dog.'”
Don’t judge a book by its cover. An irresponsible human cropped this loving dog’s ears to make him look scary. Zeke didn’t ask for this change and because of his look, this sweet and submissive dog is being overlooked.
The ideal forever family would be an active family with another dog for Zeke to play with. A family willing to involve him in their daily activities and one with no small children – due to Zeke’s large size – is preferred.
