Two weeks ago, some heroic police officers in Wheaton, Maryland saved the life of a dog who had been shot, and now they are helping cover the costs of her veterinary treatment.

On August 21st a nine-month-old boxer mix named Ruby was shot in the face and shoulder.  Her breathing was labored and she was quickly bleeding out.  Officer Michelle Ballor rushed her to the Kindness Animal Hospital, where Dr. Jeff Zolkiewicz worked to keep her alive.

A police press release said according to veterinarians, “Ruby would need extensive medical care to save her life. Officer Noah Leotta spoke with Ruby’s owners and suggested that they consider surrendering Ruby to the hospital rather than euthanizing her so that she could have the opportunity to live.”

Sergeant Dawn Felsen learned this week that the injured pup was improving, but still needs additional procedures.  Dr. Zolkiewicz had “absorbed all the costs for these surgeries” because he wanted to make sure Ruby survived.  He has also decided to adopt her.

Now officers on the shift that responded to the call are collecting money and personally chipping in to provide Ruby’s much-needed care.  Donations can be sent to the Montgomery County Police Department’s Fourth District station at 2300 Randolph Rd, Wheaton, Maryland, 20902.

The shooting, committed by a family member with a shotgun, continues to be under investigation.
