4.30.15 - Dog Dumped at Kill Shelter Will Now Be Saving Lives1

Reba was surrendered by her owner at a kill shelter in North Carolina.  Bloodhounds aren’t high in demand, so her days were limited.  But now she’s going to have a brand new, exciting life in Hawaii as a search-and-rescue dog.

Kelli Oakley, manager at the Person County Animal Shelter, quickly noticed that Reba wouldn’t do well in a relaxed home with nothing to do.  She needed a job.

Oakley contacted Haw River Public Safety Dogs Inc. to see if Reba could qualify as a service dog.   The nonprofit group trains shelter dogs to become rescue dogs and donates them to law enforcement agencies.

Reba recently completed her training, and will soon be on her way to a Hawaii police department.  Her trainers started a fundraiser to cover the cost of her equipment and travel expenses.
