Abby, a 4-pound Chihuahua/Yorkie mix from Phoenix, Arizona, needed the help of Emergency Animal Medical Technicians (EAMTs) from the Arizona Humane Society to get out of one sticky situation. Thanks to the EAMTs and a jar of peanut butter, the little dog was rescued.
The pet was found with her front legs and face glued down to a glue board trap. These are used to capture mice and rats. The mutt had attempted to free herself from the trap by biting/eating it, but her chewing made things worse. Abby had trouble breathing because glue had lodged in her nostrils and inside her mouth.
EAMT Andy Gallo responded to the emergency call and knew he couldn’t just try to pull Abby off the trap. Doing so would cause extreme pain and the pet’s fur and skin could be ripped off her tiny body.
Instead, the EAMT came up with a creative way to free the pup. With the help of a peanut jar, the emergency responder lather the dog and slowly pulled her off the trap.
“[The dog] had pressed both her paws deep into the glue,” said Gallo. “I guess she was trying to chew it off. It took a lot of work [and] a lot of peanut butter.”
As Gallo worked to free Abby, the dog appeared thankful to get help and seemed a bit hungry.
“As I’m using the peanut butter to get [her] out, she’s trying to eat [it],” says Gallo. “She’s in the worst situation possible and she’s still licking me and still was so sweet.”
Once free the pet was taken to Second Chance Animal Hospital where she was groomed. A few days later Abby was made available for adoption through Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion and found her forever home.
