Desiree, a black and white adult pit bull from Chattanooga, Tennessee, was found trapped inside a garbage bag dumped in a garbage container. Luckily, the dog survived because she tore open the plastic bag and a good Samaritan found her inside the garbage container.

A man disposing of his garbage came across the pit bull when he went to toss garbage in the container. He found the dog sitting on top of broken glass and immediately called police. The dog was rescued and authorities believe she was dumped in the dumpster located on the 7700 block of Nautical Way on November 8th or 9th.

Desiree was transported to McKamey Animal Center where veterinarians found she was emaciated, had a broken leg and suffered from skin infections. Animal rescuers say her injuries didn’t happen overnight and someone must have purposely let the dog get to the poor state she was found in.

“Clearly Desiree has been suffering for an extended period of time. She didn’t get this way overnight,” Jamie McAloon, director of McKamey Animal Center told Times Free Press. “Our staff struggles with cases like this where it is obvious this animal has been in distress for weeks if not months and we ask the question — why didn’t someone report her?”

Rescuers say it will take months to nurse the dog back to health, but they are hopeful she will make a full recovery.

There is an ongoing police investigations and authorities are following up on various leads. The believe the dog lived in a residence near the garbage bin.

There is a $5,500 reward for anyone with information on Desiree’s abuser. Anyone with information is urged to call 423-305-6500 extension 3 or leave an anonymous tip at 423-305-6500. Emails with information can be sent to Jamie McAloon at [email protected].
