1.28.16 - Update on Brooklyn Blizzard Dogs0

We told you about two pit bulls in Brooklyn who were forced to endure the recent blizzard outside, and we’ve been bringing you updates as they come.  We’re happy to tell you that one of the dogs has now been surrendered to Guardians of Rescue, and they are still working to save the second.

1.28.16 - Update on Brooklyn Blizzard Dogs2

To sum up what’s been going on:  Evelyn Tully-Costa is tired of hearing her neighbor’s poor dogs crying all the time.  They are always left outside, whether it’s eight degrees or eighty, with only a dilapidated shack for protection.  This has been going on for years.  She and other neighbors call the police, who make the woman let the dogs in, but as soon as they’re gone, the dogs are back outside.

When two feet of snow was dumped on the area, Tully-Costa had finally had enough, and rallied her neighborhood together to speak even louder for these poor dogs.  She took a video of the abuse and posted it online, where it quickly drew thousands of views and shares.  Police were called by dozens of people, and they arrived at the President Street house and forced the heartless woman to shovel a path to the dogs and bring them in.  As usual, she had them back outside as soon as the commotion died down, but that’s when the Guardians of Rescue stepped in.

The hugely popular rescue group is known for getting people to surrender their tethered dogs into their care, and providing insulated shelters and straw for the dogs whose owners insist on keeping them outside to suffer.  They’ve been needling the pit bulls’ owner into surrendering them for several days now, but in the meantime, has fixed up their derelict shanty.

Here’s the most recent news:

Current laws in the state of New York ARE straightforward, so the police and ASPCA need to do their jobs and actually enforce them!

“For all dogs that are left outdoors in inclement weather, a housing facility, which must: (1) have a waterproof roof; (2) be structurally sound with insulation appropriate to local climatic conditions and sufficient to protect the dog from inclement weather; (3) be constructed to allow each dog adequate freedom of movement to make normal postural adjustments, including the ability to stand up, turn around and lie down with its limbs outstretched; and (4) allow for effective removal of excretions, other waste material; dirt and trash. The housing facility and the area immediately surrounding it shall be regularly cleaned to maintain a healthy and sanitary environment and to minimize health hazards.”

What is vague about this??  These dogs should have been seized – yesterday!

Hopefully this cruel beast will surrender her other dog, too.  Sadly, she will likely just get more, because she believes that she needs them for her “protection,” but fails to understand that dogs who are forced to live in a hovel in the yard aren’t protecting her at all, and are the ones who need protection from her.

We will keep you updated on this case’s progress.
