Two police officers were patrolling the surrounding areas of Cerro Monserrate in Bogota, Colombia, when they stumbled upon an abandoned construction site that was on fire. What caught their attention was that among the flames and heavy smoke they heard a dog crying.

The officers were not equipped with fire suits or masks, but they knew they had to do whatever they could to save the pet.

The men entered the property through a broken side window and did a quick walk through. One of the officers, Jeisson Salinas, was recording with his cell phone. The footage clearly shows the property is filled with dark smoke and dangerous flames are also visible.

The officers’ first attempt at the rescue yielded no results.  They had to go back to the entrance point, breath in clean air, and head back inside for a second attempt. During their second sweep they found a friendly dog sitting inches away from the flames.

The hero men quickly grabbed a hold of the pet and rushed out of the property. Once outside they coughed up smoke and tried to clear their airways. The rescued dog simply sat in front of them and let them check him.

Police Captain Luis Enrique Ortiz told La Vanguardia his men surrendered the dog to animal control after they made sure he was not injured.

Thanks to the hero police officers, the little mutt left behind in the abandoned construction site is alive today.
