On February 28, 2016, a couple camping near Corona volcano in Lanzarote, Spain, were shocked when they heard a dog crying out for his life. They discovered two men violently beating him, but thanks to the concerned animal lovers and their heroic actions the men fled the scene and the dog’s life was saved.

According to La Opinion, it was around noon when the couple heard what they described as agonizing cries of help. Upon investigating, they found two men believed to be 40 years old, beating the pet with sticks and rocks. The couple screamed and chased the men away.

Authorities were called and they immediately came to King’s aid. He was found clinging to life, semi-unconscious and with a large fracture to his head.

“Without even knowing who we were, the dog wagged his tail as we approached to help him,” said one of the responding officers.

The injured dog was rushed to a local veterinarian who determined he had sustained blunt force trauma to his head, chest and lungs. King’s diaphragm and lungs were filled with fluids, and experts believe his aggressors attempted to drown him before beating and leaving him for death.

No one thought the dog would survive, but thousands of people prayed and hoped for a miracle. Local Humane Society SARA took King in and offered him the best medical care possible. After days in intensive care, he made the miraculous recovery everyone hoped for.

“He is a lucky dog,” said a SARA representative. “He has become very famous and many families have expressed interest in adopting him.”

Even though King can now stand on his own, he is still having difficulty eating. Once he receives a clean bill of health, he will be made available for adoption.

The organization has received so many adoption applications they don’t think it will take long to match King with his perfect forever home.

For now, authorities continue to look for the animal abusers and hope the public helps them capture the criminals.
