The word has been spreading about a pair of dogs that three women brought into the shelter, purportedly as strays.  According to The Dodo, they may have gotten away without anyone being wise to their  story, but for two small things.  The dogs were wearing tags engraved with the owners names.  After some questioning, the trio admitted they were losing their home and couldn’t keep the dogs.

In early September of last year, mother Tay Tay and daughter Holly were left behind.  The Southold Animal Shelter shelter took the dogs in and got them to a veterinarian to have them checked out.  Both were suffering from arthritis and severe skin issues that, unfortunately, has resulted in bumpy skin due to lack of early treatment.  That aside, the girls are in overall good health and seeking forever homes.  The shelter manager, Gabby Stroup, told The Dodo she has even started a Facebook page for Tay Tay in the hopes someone will fall in head over heels for this lovable girl.

The adoption page on the website reads in part, “Four-year-old Tay Tay is a ginger-colored, special-needs gal who requires a VERY special owner–one who won’t let a skin condition get in the way of love,” and “Holly is a soft-hearted, special-needs gal who requires a VERY special owner–one who won’t let a superficial condition get in the way of love. Holly enjoys walking, nuzzling, and spending quality time with her human friends at the shelter.” Holly does have some hip issues, but it is also noted that the shelter will try to help off-set costs.

You only need to look in their beautiful faces to know they are looking to be someone’s companion. People need to surrender animals for all kinds of reasons, as sad as that is to admit.  What is utterly heartbreaking is to think that the three women, for whatever reason, didn’t want to live up to the the responsibility required of being a pet owner, even if that meant they could no longer take care of their pets. Things happen in life that throw all of us for a loop, but these girls deserved better, if only for their owners being straight forward about their situation.  Owning a pet is a serious responsibility.  We accept being caretakers.  The former owners should be ashamed of their actions and lack of accountability.  Sadly, it is Tay Tay and Holly who are having to suffer, but it is with sincere hope that the right person is out there just ready, willing and able to give them the forever home they deserve.
